"Art should explain itself"

In the film "My Kid Could Paint That," someone states that "art has an obligation to explain itself to you. If it doesn't, it's the art's fault. I don't believe that this statement is true. I don't believe this because art is not meant to be explained to everyone. When someone looks at a painting or piece of artwork, each person perceives it as something different. That man looked at a painting done by Marla and saw a baby's face and a doorway with two people. I saw nothing of the sort. Art doesn't explain itself to people because quite honestly artwork does not have a definite explanation. Marla's work was completely abstract and everyone had different takes on what it was on. Art shouldn't explain itself, we should explain art.
